Meet Rosesandra:  I am Rosesandra, a Ghanaian trained midwife, married with 2 children. I developed an interest in Canadian Midwifery after talking to a Midwifery Lecturer in Ghana, who did her PhD in Canada. With further research, a friend and colleague introduced the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program to me. I was excited to get into the bridging program as the first step to become a Canadian Registered Midwife. The IEMBP was interactive, thorough, and intense. I must say the program was an eye-opener and very informative. It gave me an insight into what Canadian midwifery especially in the BC context was about.  Homebirth and waterbirth were new and intriguing concepts.

Midwifery is a fulfilling profession, we support a birthing person at the most crucial yet exciting time of their life, we join them in their journey to bring forth another little human, holding a lamp to brighten their path. My favorite part is seeing women and birthing persons dressed all white to celebrate their labour and delivery at their first week postnatal clinic. I am awed at all the movement noticed on the baby’s head as they make their way out of the mother. I completed midwifery training in August 2011 and have worked in the rural setting since then. I have a BSc in Midwifery and am awaiting my graduation for an MPhil in Nursing.

Before moving into Canada, I managed a unit as the ward in charge which came with the responsibility of managing the affairs of staff in the unit and maintaining optimal care of clients patronizing our facility. I was also a preceptor for nurses and midwives from the university of Cape Coast and Ankaful Nursing training college, supporting students to navigate the beautiful profession by the bedside. Having spent my last 8 years in a psychiatric hospital, I have garner lots of experience in mental health and support during pregnancy.

My African name Ewokyili, simply means; “my little mother”, named after my paternal grandmother and my last name Ekpale means; “it’s good” has impacted my life greatly with inborn leadership quality and positive outlook to life. I am the first child among my mother’s 3 children and the first daughter of my father. I am also the oldest sibling among my maternal cousins, this comes with the role of babysitting and caring for younger siblings; a role I pride myself on as been my best. Outside work, I have served as the second councilor of young women for 3 years and the president of the Relief society; an all women organization with about 80 active members in my church for 3 years as well. I also sit on the Midwifery Association of BC board as a member of the board of directors.

I enjoy cooking and trying out new dishes, growing up, I tried a lot of sporting and fun activities though I did not do well in either Table tennis, Athletes, volley and basketball, I am good in ludo and ampe.

I am happy to join the team of wonderful midwifery staff and look forward to interacting with you.
